Thank you! You are right on target. The bad guys always win except in the movies and that isn't going to change. Still, more psychopath awareness must lead to more psychopath resistance. Psychopathy is becoming a more common topic recently, and I am doing what I can to contribute. I am the target of a good looking, charismatic, well respected psychopath. People want to shine by his light but are blinded by it, too, and I am finding myself quite alone and disregarded. My only option to make an impact, it seems, is to fully expose this individual. That would be dangerous. I know what a conscience free person is capable of. Already, as I am seen as a threat, I fear for my safety but have nowhere to turn for support or protection.

The entire network of Stack Exchange sites constitute a giant social advertising scheme. But that isn't it's biggest problem.

The programming field is already rife with male inferiority complexes. Give these little men a site like SO, and they will seek power and social approval any way they can. And once they have it, they will flaunt it any chance they get.

The other problem with the field these days is if you're not a "social coder" with SO rep, a github and a blog, you're further down on the totem pole of employability, regardless of your private skills and accomplishments.

It's official: the New Delicious does not suck as much as it did in September. You can see your own links now by logging in and going to "profile" dropdown menu and click on My Links. This will bring you to your most recent links and all your tags on the right, just like it useta be.
The stacks feature is still weird, though. Although, to be fair, I haven't really put it through its pace. At least it sucks less, though. I had filed for divorce from it! Now I'll give it a second chance.

Actually, the BMI/ASCAP/SESAC extortion scam makes it hard for beginner artists to find paying gigs in small restaurants.

If the restaurant has to pay the musician *AND* the extortion licensing organization, they are much less likely to do it.

If you're a small independent musician, BMI/ASCAP/SESAC are your enemies, because they make it harder for you to find paying gigs. The extortion licensing organizations only benefit bestselling musicians, and in many case, the copyright is owned by the media corporation.

If you are a club, bar, or restaurant owner, and you have a complaint that the PRO (performance rights organizations) fees are too high, or that their tactics for collecting have been thuggish, then there is a legitimate complaint and I'm inclined to sympathize with you.

But I am a musician, and my experience with playing out is that everyone wants you to play for free or for tips, and it is damn near impossible to get a career started when restaurant owners expect you to somehow magically draw a crowd to a place and have them pay you a decent tip or buy your CDs on top of whatever they are having to pay for their meal. Plenty of people play for free, but most are not very good, and if they are, then they have spent hours, days, months, and years practicing, listening, and writing to get that way.
When you don't pay them or believe that you should get the result of their blood, sweat, and tears for nothing, then you are exploiting them and telling them that you believe what they do is worth nothing.

If I came into your restaurant and ordered food and decided I didn't want to pay you for my beer or something, you'd throw me out and tell me not to come back, and you'd be justified. At the very least you'd think I was a colossal jerk because it costs you money to put a plate of food and beer on the table. Well it costs musicians money to drive to a venue, buy and upkeep instruments, and produce the CDs that they sell at their shows. Not to mention the opportunity cost (there's a good Red State economics term - look it up) of the hours writing and practicing as I said before.

That would all be true even if writing a quality hit song were easy, and it is not. Even for experienced and talented writers it is a crap shoot sometimes whether or not an audience will like any particular song, not to mention the cost and trouble of getting that song on the radio.

So if you want ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC to give you a more affordable rate, fine. I would love to see that dialogue open up and get some national attention. But if you are using musicians and their music to drive business into your establishment, whether or not they are successful (you still have to pay for the lettuce that people don't eat and the fruit that goes bad), and you are not paying them YOU ARE EXPLOITING THEM AND STEALING THEIR SERVICES.

I'd love to write more, but I have to drive another 35 miles to play another show for no money.

To OP: Parkinson's disease is not the same as tardive dyskinesia; in fact, they're describing the opposite symptoms. People with PD are known to have difficulty moving due to a lack of dopamine in their brain. Tardive dyskinesia is a condition in which people who have it develop involuntary twitching movements. It is a long-term complication of using medications that increase the amount of dopamine present in the brain. Thus, one can say prolonged treatment of PD can lead to TD.

In the case with Michael J Fox, his symptoms of TD is the result of him using medications to treat/manage his PD. As for how he got PD in the first place, it's been theorized that he was taking recreational drugs that contained the chemical MPTP (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine), which has been shown to cause a syndrome identical to that of PD.

I know that this is an old post but I want to clarify something here for everyone including the author:

I don't know why people do still aggressively leave comments defending SO here. To me it's a joke. I recently got a nazi-moderator insta-close a totally legit and interesting question (already upvoted and favorited by users).

The people defending SO here are probably a mix between some karma-whores and some SO shills.

I Google'd about this issue (nazi editing / modding) and found your site. You're 100% on spot. SO sucks big times and it's important that people who find that SO sucks big times have places to make themselves heard: they can silence people on their blogs (J. A. from SO being apparently famous for that), they can nazi-edit SO, but they cannot nazi edit the entire web...

I also think more and more people will post negative comments about SO because SO sucks more and more: the quality is going downhill, frontpages of the various SE sites are a joke and the mods are simply getting nuts...

Having spent 15 years in broadcast, I pretty much saw all the tricks to sneaking in commercials (spots). However, back years ago, the FCC dictated how many minutes of commercial content could be inserted in an hour segment. That eventually went by the wayside when powerful interests got the FCC to drop that mandate with the infamous expression "let the market dictate." However, satellite and cable is a different breed of cat and pretty much unregulated. I have Direct TV and I am really angered by the ever INCREASING number of commercial inserts. Ambulance chasing attorneys, psychics, diet pills, cures for anything that ails man, assorted junk being hawked, promos and the worst, out-and-out fraud and ripoffs. In short, the networks seem to have no conscience, just unbridled greed. It seems to be like the the old wild west with no rules. The only cure for this is going to be massive subcriber cancellations. BTW, a good number of channels I am paying for are purely infomercial channels, no value at all. And, Direct TV has the nerve, in some of their commercials, to put down Dish Network for offering worthless channels. I have cancelled my Direct TV subcription effective the end of this month. I am paying for entertainment, not an endless string of commercials.
